The notion of self-hatred present in African American culture is irrefutable, as is the fact that it is misconstrued, and unchallenged. The unparalleled powerful emotion of internalized self-hatred currently plaguing the minds of numerous Blacks is abnormal phenomenon developed over centuries. It is not a nameless occurrence empty of coherent justification. It is the consequence of an intentionally condemned system of suppression and oppression. Society has established a massive approach to preserve the notion of white normality. Everything that deviates from this white normality is looked down on. If one ever desires to discover the disease that runs ramped through the mind of our young ones, one must only look at these tweets: “Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie.” “Kk call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn't as sad. #ihatemyself” “Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the little blonde innocent girl you picture.” “Sense when has Rue been a nigger.” [sic] (Chan, 2012) So what reality are our teenagers living in? Obviously, a reality where they rarely interact with African Americans or where African Americans can only occupy the stereotypes of evil men and ghetto women. If these teenagers’ blatant ridicule of African Americans steers this country to a thoughtful scrutiny of the customs and establishments that prolong racism, it would be advantageous. However, this sort of “change through condemnation” does not appear to be beneficial to sincere consideration, and it certainly does not inspire reflection in the persons it condemns. It permits America to place blame on younger, reasonably powerless, individuals instead of considering that the problem is much larger than a couple of imprudent adolescents on Twitter. Consequently, the true criminals remain distant from persecution and the media continues to perpetuate racism.
