The Age of Reason

Starting and during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, some people began to question the principles of their classical and medieval teachings. They were introduced and started to prefer a new scientific way of drawing conclusions by simply observing themselves and the world around them. Moreover, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this scientific attitude progressed to dominate the thinking of the economically stable, well-educated upper, and comfortable classes of Europe. These people later came to be responsible for the foundation of modern science. They claim that the message of the church has been lost when the church became institutionalized. Therefore, Christians should practice their faith as the Apostles had in the past (Hoare). In addition, Blaise Pascal, an influential pietist, argued against reasoning, saying that using reasoning only produces doubt, therefore reasoning alone is not enough. He, like other pietists, did not reject reason altogether, but dimished its importance. The foundation of pietists lay in the inner feelings of faith and the love of God, rather than the outwardly evidence of devotion or intellectual logic (ASI Reader 148)

Meanwhile others subjected to Christianity, some others took the same careful observation that scientists were applying to nature and applied it to their faiths. These others insisted that such traditional beliefs as the virgin birth, Christ's divinity, and the divine origin of the Bible were unreasonable; but they continued to believe in God. These people became known as Deists. To the Deists, God was a "God of Nature" who had created the universe and set it running according to an unchanging set of natural laws, which people could discover for themselves by using their powers of observation and reason (Nicolson).
