Food and drink, cars, alcohol, cigarettes — “the average American is exposed to some 500 ads daily” (Fowles 540). How do advertisers influence people to purchase products? According to Jib Fowles in “Advertising’s Fifteen Basic Appeals”, people are attracted to what they see, “many ads seem to be saying, ‘If you this need, then this product will help satisfy it’” (541). People convincingly buy products because they believe what the ad is illustrating. Laurence Behrens and Leonard J. Rosen’s portfolio consists of ads that demonstrate various motives (556-594). Based on Fowles’ article, although advertising has some negative aspects, advertising influences people positively by fulfilling the needs to nurture, achieve, and for affiliation. …show more content…

Even though products are unneeded, advertising fulfills the need to nurture. Fowles defines the need to nurture as “the need to take care of small, defenseless creatures” (546). One succeeds in raising their family by accomplishing their need to nurture. This need appears in advertisements by showing one, as Henry A. Murray explains, “feed, help, support, console, protect, comfort, nurse, [and] heal” another (Fowles 546). For Example, the NyQuil ad expresses the need to heal a close one who is ill (Fowles 546). Advertisers can attract one’s need to nurture by appealing to their senses. Campbell’s vegetable soup includes the phrase, “it brings them [children] all the sturdy goodness of 15 different garden vegetables combined with a rich, invigoration beef stock” (Behrens and Rosen 585). I see the need to nurture in advertisements relating to dog food. I convincingly purchase advertised dog food like Caesar’s to please my need to nurture my dogs. This ad shows an owner satisfying their dog by feeding him Caesar’s dog food. Fowles presents an example of an ad containing cat food; “aren’t those darling kittens something, and how did this Meow Mix get into our shopping cart” (546).
