I believe the drinking age should be lowered from twenty one to eighteen. If a person is old enough to vote, then the person is mature enough to help decide who should run the country, and then he or she should have the privilege to be able to drink alcohol in moderation. The other premise is when we are eighteen we are able to lay our life down in the service of our country, but we our still not able to sit down with our friends and family and consume alcohol legally. By making drinking illegal until your twenty one only makes it more desirable, which leads to young adults’ being irresponsible about drinking. Originally people thought that alcoholism was a disease that they could just take a pill and be done with it. They continually sought medical advice rather than psychological help they needed (Balkin, and Szumski 104). In today’s society the word “disease” is being overly used, people are calling simple disorders a disease such as alcohol abuse, overeating, gambling, smoking, anorexia, bulimia, and drug abuse. They feel it is more socially acceptable to have an illness than a diagnosed disorder (Balkin, and Szumski 105). An alternative term we can use instead of disease or sickness could be a “personal issue.” Psychological scientists have found out that there are many aspects to some addictions. Genetics, chemicals, and society all play a key role (Balkin, and Szumski 111).
Wine has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and even some cancers along with slowing down neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease (Bauer). Frequent consumption of alcoholic beverages offer cardiovascular benefits if drank in moderation. The study done by the coauthors, says that people who drink at least one glass of alcohol a day have a less likely chance to develop coronary disease (Balkin, and Szumski 17). “One drink is defined as a 5-ounce glass of red or white wine, 12-ounces of regular, beer (1 bottle) or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits” (Bauer ).
