The Line between Democracy and Totalitarianism in Lord of the Flies

Golding immediately shows how voting procedures of a democratic society can help stop evil from taking over. During the first encounter between Jack and his choirboys and Ralph and his group, it becomes clear the differences in between both groups. Jack, during the first meeting, yells at the boys to “Stand Still!”(Golding 20) and even when “one of the boys flopped on his face in the sand” he makes the others choirboys move “the fallen boy to the platform and let him lie” (Golding 20). With this brief peek into the leadership of Jack, it is evident that Jack has no concern for the common men in his choir, furthering the illusion of his dictatorial skills. This boy, although shy and disfigured, is given the opportunity to speak by Ralph. This tiny boy exemplifies that in a democratic society, everyone is allowed to speak even the littlest of the voices. Then, Jack attempts to capitalize on the boys fears when he says, “There isn’t a snake-thing. But if there was a snake, we’d hunt it and kill it”(Golding 36). Here, jack uses the little one’s fear of the beastie to gain control of the situation and try to put the boys fears at ease by threatening to kill it. By threatening to kill it with force, Jack is attempting to gain the little boy’s trust so that he can get away with certain actions. He then tells all of the kids that; “We’re going to hunt pigs to get meat for everybody.” (Golding 36) Here, Jack exemplifies the corruption prevalent in a totalitarian society, which allows the totalitarian government to keep its citizens mollified, while they control every facet of life. Golding, in this situation, tries to show his opinion clearly as to which government type he prefers based on the picture he paints in this situation. In this stage, Golding attempts to show here that in a totalitarian government, the citizens are unsure what to think as they are fed lies and bribed, but, on the other hand, in a Democratic society, the citizens are well informed and there is a
