The Effects of Drinking Alcohol
Throughout life people make many different decisions. People make decisions on what to wear, what to eat, what to think, what to do with their life and what will benefit them in the long run. These are decisions that may seem small but they ultimately affect the person in either a positive or a negative way later on in their life. Many decisions we make in life are not the right ones, and they can hurt us later on in life if we do not take into account the consequences of our actions. A decision that can negatively creep up on people is drinking alcohol. The negative effects of drinking alcohol outweigh the few positive health benefits that it presents.

The shrinking is due to the loss of nerve cells, which are rapidly killed by alcohol when a person over drinks. Alcohol also impairs memory by affecting the region of the brain that stores memories (Lerner 1). There is a saying that many people have heard when they are being encouraged not to drink and that is, “Every time you take a drink of alcohol you kill ten thousand brain cells.” Although some people have a harder time than others believing this, it is true because alcohol decreases the probability that nerve cells will become active and transmit different important information throughout the body. Drinking a lot over a long period or even a single occasion can damage the heart and other vital organs as well leading to very serious complications (“Alcohol and Heart Disease” 3).
The NIAAA’s article, “The Effects of Drinking Alcohol on the Physiological Processes and Biological Development” from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism argues the many effects, long and short-term of drinking alcohol. They support this claim by first describing the effects of alcohol on the liver, then the more harmful effects on the neuroendocrine system, and finally the effects on peoples bones. The NIAAA’s purpose is to help inform the public about the effects alcohol can have on a person in order to help others understand the risks of a “fun night.” The NIAAA adopts a more serious tone throughout the article and tries to address
