The most severe of all sentences: death. Also known as capital punishment, this is the most severe form of punishment in the courts as it is requires law enforcement officers to kill the offender. Our past has left us thinking that if someone steals from us, we should steal from them, or if someone yells at us, we should yell at them. But does there ever come a point where if someone kills somebody, we should kill them? Today, there is a large controversy over the death penalty, whether it helps society or not, and if it is morally right. When we find someone guilty of murder and sentence them to death; does that not make murderers out of us? Many countries around the world have not abolished the punishment, but only use it under certain circumstances. Others, have it too, but have not actually used it in more than ten years. Countries such as the United States, China, Iran, and Pakistan still have a strong belief in the death penalty today. Statistics show that in China alone, there was a surplus of 470 people, including children, killed for stealing, violence, murder and drug use. When comparing places that still rely on this punishment, and others that don’t, the majority of the countries with this act show higher murder rates then ones that don’t. The average murder rate per 100,000 people in 1996 among death penalty states was 7.1, the average murder rate among non- death penalty states was only 3.6. (Capital Punishment)

There are four major issues in the capital punishment debate, the first being deterrence. A major purpose of the death penalty is to stop future criminal conduct. It is believed that death, fears almost every human being; therefore once one person is killed from government orders, crime rates should decline. Most criminals would think twice before committing murder if they knew their own lives were at stake.
