In the Oxford Dictionary, the American Dream is defined as the traditional social ideals of the United States of America: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. People have the right of life and liberty, but happiness is not a right. Happiness can only be given by the amount of effort a person gives. People who have determination to devote their Life and exercise their Liberty to the accomplishment of discovering their talent and use what they like doing to achieve a goal. The film, Pursuit of Happiness, shows the American Dream being achieved by the main character, Chris Gardner, by working hard and using his talents. The economy did not stop him. What kept Christopher going was the faith that his son had in him. In one scene, Christopher Gardner said to his son “You gotta trust me, all right?” and Christopher responded,” I trust you.” The quote shows that both characters have faith that everything is going to be okay (The Pursuit of Happyness).Also, Christopher did not doubt his talents when he solved the Rubik’s cube. He showed that he had faith in his talents to solve a problem in order to achieve his goal, the American dream. Another scene where Christopher’s faith was seen was during the job interview where Chris Gardner was covered in paint, using his knowledge and talent he had faith that he can still nail the job interview for an unpaid internship at Dean Witter (The Pursuit of Happyness).
Furthermore, Chris Gardner shows that the American Dream is achievable, possible through perseverance. Chris Gardner stated, "You got a dream, you gotta protect it... If you want something, go get it. Period." ("The Pursuit of Happyness", IMDb). What Chris stated is basically the definition of perseverance: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. Chris Gardner had nothing left. His wealth is shown not as money, but only relationship he has left, father and son relationship.
