Teaching Philosophy

My personal teaching philosophy will be based off of my role model teachers growing up. For example, my fourth grade teacher, Ms. Juster, was a woman who I will never forget and whose influence made me chose the profession I am working towards today. Like her, I want to stimulate my students into finding their own strengths and desires so they feel more successful not only in a school environment but also in a larger civil community as well. I want my students to see me as a facilitator of learning, rather than a tyrant who harshly judges. Students learn best when they are comfortable and I will allow them, in fact encourage them, to take risks without judging their creativity.

I believe these quizzes will build responsibility among the students and give them something to value. As far as essay writing, which is a mandatory skill of secondary level students, I will be creative in topic assignment. I will be flexible and fresh with ideas rather than have students stuck performing the same writing tasks which may bore them.

To keep my routine inventive, I will use a combination of lecture, film, debate, art, music, and theater. By approaching subject matter in different ways, I will be more likely to grab a student’s attention who previously may not have been inspired to learn. I believe group work, both large and small, will force kids to share their ideas and in return learn from one another. At the same time, group work encourages students to familiarize with their own social skills and those around them. I believe the more communication that goes on, the more students can reach a personal self awareness and perhaps even gain confidence. Isolation by sitting in rows of desks will only alienate students, especially those who need to ask their peers questions on material.

As far as discipline, there is a fine line between friend and boss, and I plan to balance my feet in both places. There is a time for humor, especially to establish comfortableness, but there is also a time for seriousness. I need to be authoritative enough to keep a
