Smoking should be banned from public places. Studies show that smoking can lead to cancer. Not only does this put the smoker’s life at risk, it also affects the lives of non-smokers, including pregnant women. Smoking all together is a dangerous thing to do. It began thousands of years ago with the use or tobacco in South America (Libal 11). No one knew about the long-term health effects of smoking tobacco before the twentieth century. It was decades of cigarette use before society began to realize that a health crisis was emerging (Libal 13). The health crisis that was emerging was cancer, among other diseases such as heart disease, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Cigarettes contain many harmful substances that help contribute to the

Smokers get sick more often than nonsmokers. They get bad colds and a lung infection called bronchitis. Lungs pump carbon dioxide and bring oxygen into the body. Lungs are made up of tubes called bronchi. There are tiny balloon-like sacs in which the tubes lead. Those tubes contain tiny hairs cilia. The cilia job is to brush the mucus out the airways, so when nicotine is inhaled, it paralyzes the cilia. Therefore, the cilia cannot push the mucus out the way and causes the airway to get clogged. The cilia eventually die from the tar and chemicals that settle in the airways. The bronchi become sore from all the coughing the smoker does when trying to push out mucus. In conclusion, the smoker gets chronic bronchitis (Keyishian 16).
More than 160,000 Americans die every day from a disease known as lung cancer. Eighty seven percent of lung cancer cases come from smoking. Hardly anyone died from lung cancer in the United States before the 1900’s. Approximately 4,000 lives were claimed yearly by the mid 1930’s (Libal 20). Lung cancer begins with tar. Tar causes more deadly problems than society would think. After a while tar can change cells in the lungs and make the cells grow out of control. Lumps and tumors start to form in the lungs. These lumps are cancerous and they block breathing which can result in lung cancer.
Secondhand smoke is one of the main reasons smoking should be banned from the public.
