“Recreational water illnesses (RWIs) are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans. RWIs can also be caused by chemicals in the water or chemicals that evaporate from the water and cause indoor air quality problems. RWIs may include a wide variety of infections, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections. Many RWIs (skin, ear, eye, respiratory, neurologic, wound, and other infections) are caused by germs that live naturally in the environment (for example, in water and soil)” (Centers for Disease Control and …show more content…
Prevention of acute otitis externa is very simple, yet may not be appealing. This includes wearing a bathing cap or ear plugs and also making sure what you dry your ears well along with keeping things such as Q-tips and fingers out of your ears when you feel water in them. The best practices for getting the irritating water out of your ears is tipping your head side to side to loosen up the water in the ear or grabbing your ear lobe and moving it in many directions getting the water out and a method that is not commonly used as much anymore is putting baby oil in the ear to get the water on top of the oil so it can drain. Outbreaks caused by acute otitis externa affect all ages, but primarily persons 40-64 years of age followed by 5-9 years of age. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acute otitis extera occurs more during July then any other month and increases rapidly from May to July and decreases rapidly from July and August and decreases at a slower rate from August to December. This is relevant because around our region July to August are very warm and a vacationing months and people are more likely to go to the lakes and spend copious amounts of time in the water with out a break.
