Every student has their own preference for learning, whether it is visual instruction, auditory instruction, or kinesthetic instruction. Whichever their learning style is, teachers’ core responsibility is to instruct their students in the subject matter in a way for them to understand. At the same time, teachers must make sure that students are genuinely learning the content. There are teachers who assume these types of instructions are sufficient enough to ensure that students are learning. However, student learning goes beyond direct instruction. 32). Specifically, mathematics and science teachers should not be only interested in what solution the students come up with for a problem, but also on how students approach and solve the problem. At times, it may be appropriate for teachers to ask students the purpose—the “why” in learning—of the content of the lesson before starting instruction. That way, students are thinking about the practical applications of the subject matter and become curious about it, leading them to be more engaged in their learning. Furthermore, Gallenstein (2005) stated: “In cooperative learning groups, opportunities to brainstorm, discuss, clarify, and synthesize knowledge are abundant” (p. 36). Teachers should not often give assignments that are individualized. Instead, teachers should gear towards group activities within a lesson, such as group quizzes, where students can discuss questions with classmates and learn from each other. Rather than having students sit quietly at their desks while lecturing, teachers can incorporate cooperative learning during class and facilitate group learning. Students are then able to discuss their thoughts, questions, and knowledge with each other. In addition, teachers must create a positive, cultivating classroom environment where students are comfortable learning in.
