Mmmm... Oatmeal. American’s food of choice for a healthy breakfast. So many people look forward to that piping hot bowl of pure creamy delight in the morning, and have made it a part of their lives and their families’ daily lives. But, could this wonderful food suddenly change into an unhealthy substance overnight? Well, it has, thanks to America’s corporate food giant, McDonald’s. Like everything thing the company develops for consumption, it has made oatmeal unhealthy. Just recently, on January 3, McDonald’s released a new “healthy” option for breakfast called the “Fruit and Maple Oatmeal” and the at first new addition was welcomed. However due to closer examination by New York Times columnist, Mark Bittman in his article titled “How …show more content…
The aspect that cannot be argue is nutrition: Incredibly, the McDonald’s product contains more sugar than a Snickers bar and only 10 fewer calories than a McDonald’s cheeseburger or Egg McMuffin. The bottom-line question is, “Why?” Why would McDonald’s, which appears every now and then to try to persuade us that it is adding “healthier” foods to its menu, take a venerable ingredient like oatmeal and turn it into expensive junk food? Their answer, through e-mail and through a spokesperson (FMO is “fruit and maple oatmeal”): “Customers can order FMO with or without the light cream, brown sugar and the fruit. Our menu is entirely customizable by request with our ‘Made for You’ platform that has been in place since the late 90s.” Though this article is splendidly written and covers all the majors points, it has a few flaws. To fully understand it, sometimes you have to look at the flaws along with the perfection. To facilitate such an examination I plan asking a few key questions. Is the information accurate? Yes, and no, because it is written as an opinion column, so it’s going to influenced by the writer’s ideas. However, to defend his opinions Mr. Bittman finds excellent sources in facts and backs them up strongly, but that doesn’t mean there aren't any flaws in his information. When he was talking
