It was during and after the American Revolution that many of the main ideas of the Enlightenment were used as the guidelines to help influence things such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, formed the country by presenting the ideas of natural rights in terms of government and religion. He understood the importance of education and making such ideals work together in a new nation. Jefferson knew his Enlightenment ideals could be put into use in the new colonies. Others, such as James Madison, were similar and helped with the principles in which the country is based on, and their Enlightenment ideas live on. Enlightenment concepts such as freedom from oppression, natural rights, and new ways of thinking about governmental structure made up the foundations for colonial America. All aspects were affected by the Enlightenment and many important people were also influenced.
The Revolution emerged after a string of unfair taxes was laid upon the colonists by the British government, who needed this extra income to help them with their wars overseas. At this point, the colonists were paying taxes that would go to support local projects and more noticeably, the Stamp Tax and the Sugar Act, were seen as completely unnecessary. Using the Enlightenment values of freedom and reason, the colonists concluded that these taxes were unfair and stood up for their rights. These colonists wanted their own government that was based on Enlightenment principles, causing a Revolution.
