In American history, many men and women have been confronted with hardships such as inequality and discrimination. The early American colonist had to fight for their rights: this applied to white men. African American men would have to wait another 90 years befor their rights. Women would have to wait even longer.. Three documents that express a similar desire to obtain freedom, equality, and independence are “The Declaration Of Independence,” by Thomas Jefferson, “The Declaration Of Sentiments,” by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, and finally, “A Disappointed Woman,” by Lucy Stone. He made the meetings in the most dreadful places he could possibly find so that the colonist would obey him with total submission. Another rhetorical strategy that Jefferson uses is diction. Diction is the author’s word choice. Jefferson uses diction for precision and accuracy so that the king will understand exactly what he is writing. Here is one phrase where Jefferson makes excellent use of diction. He writes,
“These United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be free and independent states, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is ought to be dissolved; and that as Free and Independent states, they should have full power to levy war, conclude peace contract alliances, establish commerence, and to do all other acts and things which Independent States may of right do.” (Jefferson)
The key phrases in this quote are, ‘they are absolved,’ and ‘ought to be dissolved.’ Absolved means to be free from something and dissolved means to be ended. So if reworded, what this quote means is, the colonist wish to be free from all forms of British government, in particular, taxes and also wish to be their own free and independent states with their own rights and rules.
