Critique on Society: Lord of the Flies, and I Only Came to Use the Phone

In the modern day world, society is an important part of our everyday lives. However, oftentimes, society can be detrimental to moral values. In both Lord of the Flies and I Only Came to Use the Phone, the authors offer criticism on society and point out its faults. To demonstrate these faults, the authors use characters, on both sides of the power struggle, to shed criticisms on their book’s societies. Furthermore, by utilizing symbolism, the authors are able to make criticisms parallel to people as a whole. Which in turn, allows the authors shine a light on the many faults of mankind.

Likewise, In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the brutality of society is shown through its effects on the character Simon. In one part of the book, Simon confronts the Lord of the Flies, a decapitated pig’s head on a stick. He looks into the pig’s eyes. The novel reads,” The half-shut eyes were dim with infinite cynicism of adult life. They assured Simon that everything was a bad business” (137). The “half-shut eyes” and “cynicism of adult life” means that there is doubt about his own future and that even being incorporated in “adult life” would not save him. The quote shows that the world is a harsh place and societies can’t prevent that. The confrontation with the Lord of the Flies leads Simon to think, “What else is there to do?” and causes him to confront a supposed beast that had been plaguing the boys on the island (145). When he does, he discovers the fact that there is no beast, just a dead parachuter. However, when he goes to tell the rest of the boys the truth he is killed. The author, Golding, is able to criticize society because even though the boys created an adult-like society, it didn’t prevent them from brutally murdering one of their own or killing the truth. However, not only did the authors criticize society through its consequences on characters, they also demonstrated its faults through characters who abused their power.
