Neuroblastoma is a cancerous tumor that develops from nerve tissue. It usually occurs in infants and children. Neuroblastoma is a serious disease and it can occur in many areas of the body, sometimes starting at the sympathetic nervous system. This particular system controls your heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and some levels of hormones. Neuroblastoma can spread pretty much anywhere in the body including the bones in your face, skull, pelvis, shoulders, arms and legs. It can also spread to bone marrow, liver, lymph nodes, skin, and around the eyes. The actual cause of this tumor is still unknown. Statistics show about 700 new cases a year show up just in the United States (“Neuroblastoma-national library,” 2012). This disorder is …show more content…

Treatment for Neuroblastoma depends on the patient’s age, location of the tumor, and where the tumor has spread. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be recommended. Treatment can sometimes be successful if the cancer has not spread (Torkamani, 2008). It is also proven that for some reason younger children do better than older children. In some cases with the younger children sometimes the tumor will go away

on its own or develop into a non-cancerous tumor, which can be surgically removed (Torkamani, 2008). A new study called immunotherapy has been the recent excitement lately. Ch 14.18 has been in the making for the last 20 years, and it is giving hope for infants and children. Neuroblastoma immunotherapy is a type of treatment that controls the power of the immune system to help the body fight cancer and other diseases (“Discovery-ch14.18 immunotherapy,” 2014). In the late 1980’s, Alice Yu, M.D., at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center tested such a treatment for Neuroblastoma (“Discovery-ch14.18 immunotherapy,” 2014). A quick over view of her testing’s and findings include ch14.18 monoclonal antibody specifically targets Neuroblastoma tumor cells (“Discovery-ch14.18 immunotherapy,” 2014). When ch14.18 binds to GD2, a specific molecule found at high
