Background
Baptist Health is a non-profit health system located in Northeast Florida which is comprised of five Magnet accredited hospitals, home health agencies, behavioral health practices, pharmacies, and numerous primary care and specialty physician practices. As one of the largest healthcare providers in the region, physicians have the opportunity to practice in state of the art facilities, as well as, become affiliated with a community based hospital. As of February 2014, Baptist Health has more than 1400 physicians practicing in more than 70 specialties and close to 300 allied health professionals. Unfortunately if best practices and efficiency is not utilized in a Medical Staff Office, workflow and the quality of work can be compromised. Due to recent high turnover rates within the Baptist Health Medical Staff Office, it has come to the attention of management and employees that there may be some inefficiencies and unnecessary stressors within the current work environment. Therefore it has been decided to evaluate the current state of workflow and its potential solutions.
Current Practices The Medical Staff Office’s main responsibility is managing the credentialing and reappointment process for physicians and allied health professionals applying for privileges in any of Baptist Health’s hospitals. There are currently four credentialing specialists and four medical staff coordinators within the department. Tiffany Mousa, the credentialing specialist for Baptist Beaches and Baptist Nassau handles all initial credentialing and reappointments for practitioners interested in obtaining privileges at these hospitals. Crystal Tucker, the credentialing specialist for Baptist Jacksonville, South, and Wolfson, handles all reappointments for practitioners interested in obtaining privileges at these hospitals.
