I have been asked by the Scout Association to give guidance on how to incorporate inclusive learning an teaching in to their training scheme to meet the needs of the leaders who come from diverse backgrounds.

Outside scouting, why does inclusive teaching matter? Some reasons why are listed below; • Inclusive teaching is more likely to be good teaching. • We live in a diverse society: education should reflect, promote and facilitate this. • More and more disabled people are entering higher education. • Government legislation requires universities not to discriminate, and to provide equality of opportunity for disabled students. • Disabled students are increasingly aware of their rights and are less prepared to accept inadequate provision. • Although provision for disabled students has dramatically improved in recent years, it is still patchy, under-resourced and inconsistent.

To summarise in Scouting we have established that we come from a multitude of backgrounds, this is recorded in the annual census figures for membership numbers. Knowing that we come from multiethnic backgrounds it is reasonable to assume that we will also have different styles of learning to deal with.

A learning style as the more or less consistent way in which a person perceives, conceptualizes, organizes and recalls information.

A students learning style will be influenced by their genetic make-up, their previous learning experiences, their culture and the society they live in.
