These Things I’ve Learned….

If you really stop to watch….stop to listen and take in the moment, you realize how fast the world is moving around you. You also realize that you have missed a million moments by (personally) moving--just as fast as that world. As cliché as it may sound, I blinked and I was 18 years old, I blinked and I was 30, and I blinked and now I am 50. That is how fast it feels. I swear my children were just born….but suddenly, they are adults. It feels like just yesterday that I was a young woman able to raise a child, work full time and take a night class all at once with ease, and now I’m a grandma with a good few aches and pains, looking at retirement plans. Someone who would have told me things would be ok, shared their stories, and most of all…reminded me to live in the moment. Who knows if I would have heard all of it…taken it all in, but I believe I would have listened and learned. I am not an expert at anything, but I have experienced a lot and am a pretty darn good survivor : ). I feel that I have learned lessons, gained knowledge, and lived stories that I can share…and who better to share these with than my children and grandchildren? We have always been close and open with each other, so I hope that I have taught you well. If your success as kind, sincere adults is, in any way, a result of my influence, then I have done my job well and am very proud. There is not often time for life reflection, however, so for what it is worth….here are some of my thoughts and beliefs.
We have complete and total control of who we are and what we do with our lives. You are not your job. You are not your parents. You are not who other people want you to be. You are you and you can change or not change anything anytime! Our childhoods may have made us feel insecure, afraid of being alone or rejected, or feel we had to overachieve…but that was then and this is now. The feelings might still be there, but we can fight them now as adults. I realized I was using my parent’s stressful divorce and my mom leaving as a crutch to feel bad for myself for
