Psychological disorders have been around since the beginning of time, but our understanding of them has changed drastically throughout the years. One of the more commonly known psychological disorders is schizophrenia. Unfortunately for people with schizophrenia, the disorder itself is very misunderstood by the general public. "Schizophrenics" have a reputation of being extremely dangerous. This is a result of misinformation and rumors. In reality, schizophrenia has a fascinating history and is a serious mental illness that is not as well understood as it should be.

Schizophrenia was first identified in 1887 by Emil Kraepelin. Prior to that, it had been lumped in with most other mental illnesses. In biblical times, schizophrenia (or any mental illness for that matter) was determined to be demons of the mind and was treated as such. Many thought mental illness was a punishment from God. Exorcisms were performed to try and treat these illnesses. One of the dangerous yet common methods to expel the demons was to drill holes in the skull to release it ("The History of Schizophrenia"). But schizophrenia goes even further back than biblical times. The oldest recorded description of schizophrenia was found in the Ebers papyrus in Egypt from 1550, but archaeologists have found skulls dating back to the Stone Age with holes drilled in them, suggesting that schizophrenia has been here since the dawn of man.
