The Medici Family The Renaissance was a time in Europe from the 14th to the 17th century considered to be the transition between the middle ages and the modern world. It was also known as the rebirth period, during that time, artistic developments flourished and Florence emerged with several artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo. They created the most famous masterpieces of all time, both Italian artists contributed to the art throughout the Renaissance. Other influential people were the Medici family whom financially supported the decoration of Florence’s churches, monasteries, palaces and many notorious artists during the High Renaissance.
The Medici family, also known as the House of Medici ruled Florence through most of the Renaissance period. The Medici family originally were of Tuscan origin that immigrated to Florence. The family rose to power through commerce and banking thus becoming one of the most important and powerful houses in Florence. Giovanni di Bicci de’ Medici was considered the fist of the great Medici lineage, he inherited the family business and banking operation, and managed to make his business flourish. Giovanni di Bicci had two sons, Cosimo de’ Medici and Lorenzo the Elder. Cosimo de Medici was born on September 27, 1389, in Florence. As the oldest son of Giovanni di Bicci and the first of the Medici dynasty, he was in charge of the family’s finances, he lent money to the rich houses of Florence, he increased his father’s wealth…
