The Inquiring Minds on Autism

Imagine being a mother in early twentieth-century, and raising a child that has always been different from the other children. Around this time there is no name for the disorder your child has, but something just is not right. This was the life for many before the group study conducted in 1943 by Dr. Leo Kanner. This study on a group of eleven children introduced the term Early Infantile Autism to the world, commonly referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Around the same time, Dr. Hans Asperger discovered a less severe type of the same disorder. This later became known as Asperger Syndrome (N. Mental Health). Today the disorders are described and listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The disorder can now be detected a few months after birth in most cases, and is usually well diagnosed by the age of 3. But many parents cannot detect the disease, or simply make up excuses for irregular behaviors their children have. What causes Autism Spectrum Disorder? This is a tough question to answer. Many parents have the hypothesis that having a certain vaccination caused their child to be born with autism. This has been proved several times to not be the case. Scientists and researchers have found many genes to be associated with ASD. However, they have not found one gene specifically to cause the disorder (Autism Fact Sheet).
