The Declaration of Independence, the founding document of the United States of America, prompts many to raise the question “is the Declaration of Independence simply a noble document, or a document of treason?” Possessing fundamental truths of liberty, equality, and social rights, the Declaration of Independence was based upon the noble ideals and beliefs of the founding fathers. However, contained within the pages of this document remains the undeniable reality of a document crafted with purposeful, treasonous ideals. Defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as, “the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance,” treason comes from the Latin word “tradere” meaning “to hand over, or betray” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Therefore, according to these definitions, the Declaration of Independence is both a noble and treasonous document. In order to understand the vital importance of this noble and treasonous declaration, one must understand the origin, the noble purpose, and treasonous repercussions surrounding the document.
Written during a tumultuous and revolutionary time, The Declaration of Independence unified the American colonies against the tyrannical monarchy of Great Britain.
