One of the most common problems worldwide is the existence of the term, “suicide”. Every forty seconds one takes their life away by committing suicide according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2016). What Americans don’t realize is the severity of the causes that have created this devastating problem in the first place. Many Americans today have essentially only believed the misconceptions to the causes of suicides. Those misconceptions may be, “if someone is going to kill themselves nothing will stop him/her,” “People who talk about suicide will not really do it,” (SAVE, n.d.) and so on. The factors that have been a leading cause to the horrifying result of suicide are: untreated mental illnesses, bullying, no support system, and traumatic events. As a community by working together, there are alternative solutions to prevent suicide and save many lives. With proper medical treatment, support system, and prevention programs, a difference will be made to those troubled individuals, their families, and the community.
Granted, those with mental illnesses that commit and consider suicide are at a point of breaking down because of the inability to deal with stress, helplessness, isolation, and other factors will cause an individual to take their life (WHO, 2016). More specifically, those with mental illnesses such as: bipolar, schizophrenia, and depression disorders are six times more likely to commit suicide (Brent & Mann, 2006).
