The American Revolution and the fight for independence against the British sparked a growing need for a stronger government. Therefore the Continental Congress drafted the Articles of Confederation in 1777. “The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution of the United States” (Give Me Liberty 249). Before the articles there had been no republican government of any kind. “The local loyalties outweighed national patriotism, and John Adams was quoted saying, we have no Americans in America” (Give Me Liberty 248). This sparked a change in American government that paved the way for many new opportunities for our growing nation. This came with many challenges of course, but the Articles of Confederation served as the first framework of the United States government. The Articles of Confederation brought unity to America, whether you supported it or not, you had a side. For four years the Articles sought to make the United States a stronger political actor in a world full of great powers, but the Articles failed to do so and was ratified in 1781. The failure of the Articles of confederation led to the drafting of the constitution. The constitution was written to fix the flaws of the Articles of Confederation and with hopes of digging the United States out of the hole that we buried ourselves in. The United States racked up huge amounts of debt in order to pay for the war for independence. Everything comes at a cost and the United States learned that the hard way…
