Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer, or LGBTQ for short, people have a history of getting bullied, harassed both physically and verbally, and discriminated against all because of their sexual orientation and or gender identity. Many were even reluctant of, what many refer as, “coming out of the closet” because they feared they would not receive approval and support. Throughout the years, though, there have been people fighting for equality and the acceptance of these people. Outspoken advocates for gay rights such as Harvey Milk, a politician who became the first openly gay person elected to public office in California, have spoken for change. However, there has been another crucial figure in this battle: television. It is no secret that television has a great influence in the mind of its viewers; especially the younger ones who are very easy to impress. Television can help encourage people to be open-minded about the LGBTQ community by combating stereotypes, portraying LGBTQ cartoon characters in a positive light, and can help reassure people who identify as LGBTQ that their sexual orientation and gender identity should not be the basis for disapproval.
Television can help combat assumptions by broadcasting shows whose LGBTQ cast adequately represent the community instead of playing off into stereotypes.
