Technology is a beautiful discovery, but like everything there are pros and cons. I never really had the chance to witness the birth of the technological era, as computers were around well before I was born. I believe that computers have made us smarter because we can access exponentially more information than our predecessors, but Pulitzer prize finalist, Nicholas Carr, thinks technology hurts our ability to focus. Carr essentially believes that technology feeds our brains too many distractions, and our highly adaptable brains have suffered. These distractions hurt our ability to deeply focus because we are accustomed to have notifications, pop ups, or other distractions in technology. I have not noticed this as much as other people who experienced pre-technological times, but I have noticed my ability to focus slowly diminish. I am addicted to technology. There, I said it. My addiction has not affected me negatively, but it has changed my life for better or worse. Technology consumes most of my time spent awake in this world, and I do not see that changing any time soon. Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and his interview in the Big Think has made me understand how the human brain has adapted to technology. Dr. Susan Weinschenk’s article, “Why We’re All Addicted to Texts, Twitter, and Google” clearly defines how technology affects the brain’s dopamine, creating addiction, and this relates to Carr’s idea that our brains will lose the ability to focus the more we…
