Every teacher has their own motives to answer why they chose this profession. According to Don Kauchak and Paul Eggen (2014), some of those reasons may include job security especially due to the teacher shortage (p. 9), personal and intellectual growth (p. 7), being able to have most holidays off (p. 8), wanting to make a difference (p. 7), or seeing each student’s progression towards improvements in a particular subject area (Kauchak and Eggen, 2014, p. 14). Although there are several benefits, the driving force behind my decision to teach is the self-growth through challenging work, smiles from the children when they have fun learning, and the maturing of the student’s behavior. Looking back, I now see that there were experiences that contributed to my choice to become a teacher. Ultimately, the reason most individuals go into teaching are the rewards (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p. 5). For instance, working as a lifeguard, my boss called me into her office. Naturally, feeling nervous, she politely requests that I become a swim instructor. Apparently, she had seen something in me that I had not yet seen within myself, the ability to teach. Of course, not having a choice, I got through training. I soon found that teaching people to be comfortable in the water, to develop their techniques, and help them love the water as much as I do made the job worth it.
