Introduction The ability to enhance one’s performance and abilities has been taken advantage of for years. Whether that be on the sports field, most notably, in the academics setting, or anywhere in between. If there is some amount of competition, there is almost undoubtably someone who has taken, will take, or will provide something to aid their performance. Performance enhancing drugs are well known, do their jobs well, and must not be allowed to thrive any longer.

PED’s and Steroids Probably the most well known type of performance enhancing drug is steroids. Most notably are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are similarly related to the male sex hormones (testosterone). They are synthetic variations of male sex hormones They can promote an increased growth of skeletal muscles and increase the development of some male characteristics in both males and females. Anabolic steroids were developed in the 1930’s with the primary intent and purpose of treating hypogonadism, which is a condition where the testes do not produce enough testosterone for normal growth, development, and sexual functions. There are medical uses for these steroids, however. Most often they are primarily used to treat delayed puberty and deterioration of the body caused by HIV infection or other diseases.
