Doris Lessing very correctly said, “That is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you 've understood all your life, but in a new way.”
I must admit I am still exploring myself as a teacher. I revise my beliefs on learning and what teaching should be like to meet those beliefs, constantly. Until few years back, I had a different understanding on how learning works, based on how I was taught, and one of them was learning by coercion or ‘conditioning’ based(Torre, Daley, Sebastian, & Elnicki, 2006). That sounds a bit harsh, but in fact fear has always been one of the ways of teaching, still followed in many schools. Fear of grades, fear of failing, fear of parental disappointment, fear of society, its all been there. I cannot deny that during my brief two-year stint at teaching back in my home country, I had in so many ways indulged in this practice of “force-feeding” by coercion. This changed as I entered graduate school. Graduate school is different, I realized there is no ‘spoon-feeding’ and its self motivated learning at best somewhat resonant with what Maslow stated as ‘self-initiated’ learning(Torre et al., 2006) . When I was offered to teach classrooms, I carried a mix of both self-motivated learning as well as “grade” based learning. I quickly learned that I was narrow in my assumption and there was a lot more to learning and teaching than just what I had brought with me.
