Motivation in learning and teaching

Introduction
Teachers play the first and foremost role in undermining or enhancing the motivation of students. They can facilitate self determination and essential motivation to students if the teachers are in practice of autonomy supporting style. Such a motivation is also likely to create positive consequences among students. The students of such a teacher will be less distracted in their classes and will be anxious to what is being taught. He will be associated with more positive emotions and his learning will be comprehension centered and will be ready to put more effort in his studies. Thus they can motivate students and guide them in their achievements and goals. The influence of motivation on the process of teaching and learning can be explained further with the aid of theories of motivation that are recognized in teaching as well as learning.
One of the most important theories of motivation is theory of Behaviorism. According to this human beings always respond to stimuli from outside. Every student gets motivated but motivation will be different for different students. It is a known factor that one gets motivated by those activities for which he was rewarded (Skinner 1985). Thus those behaviors that lead to positive result are more motivating for a person. Teacher in this situation will have to act as a counselor who motivates the student to get motivated for those things he will get rewards. It is for the teacher to guide him to positive things that are likely to be rewarded. Such act of a teacher will motivate the student and he will gain interest in positive activities. The teacher must assist the student to discover why he is failing and guide him in a way so that he can succeed. This is because people have a tendency to repeat an action based on previous failure or success.

Intrinsic, extrinsic and achievement motivation.

At times students choose certain subjects for study like painting just out of interest and not looking in to incentive they can gain from this. Thus the subject has enough intrinsic value
