Individual Reflection Gladiolus Learning and Development Center is located in Fort Myers, Florida and has been providing educational and developmental care for low-income working families for over 40 years. The center helps children understand the importance of education and strives to get the children 's families involved in their education to help break the cycle of poverty through education. Gladiolus allows children to Grow, Learn, and Thrive within the program. Gladiolus helps the children grow by feeding them two meals and snacks throughout the day, learn by following the Creative Curriculum to meet the social, emotional, physical and developmental needs, and thrive by being empowered by a loving and caring family environment (About Gladiolus). The social issues the my group and I addressed was children growing up in poverty. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, “More than 16 million children the United States – 22% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level — $23,550 a year for a family of four” (Child Poverty). The strategy we took was following Gladiolus mission, “The mission of the Gladiolus Learning & Development Center is to provide educational and developmental child care for children of low income working families and to strive to provide for the social, emotional, economic, and the developmental needs of those children and families” (Gladiolus).
