Maya Angelou was a famous, nationally accredited African American author and poet who lived a diverse life filled of trials and success that influenced multitudes of people around the world. “A symbol of strength and leadership for the plight of women and the underprivileged throughout her career, Angelou drew directly from her extensive life experiences to compose her most acclaimed work, a multivolume autobiography that traces the foundations of her identity as a 20th- century American black woman”(Maya Angelou Contemporary). Her real name is Marguerite Annie Johnson. She was born on April 4, 1928 in St Louis, Missouri to Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter. Maya was the second child in her family and had an older brother, Bailey Jr. She married and divorced both Tosh Angelos and Paul Du Feu. She had one child named Guy Johnson. Despite her hardships and frowned upon career choices, Maya somehow managed to make a very memorable and successful career that lasted her entire lifetime. “The first of the series of six splendid testaments, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, accounted for her first 17 years” (Holst), which was the most pivotal, altering, and challenging time of her life. At a very early age Maya and her brother Bailey was sent to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson.
