The Causes of Obesity in the U.S. Obesity is a condition that is related to an individual having excess adipose (fat) tissue and a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher (What is obesity?). A study published in Science Magazine in 2003 says that the typical American has been gaining two pounds a year (Kelly, 2008) leading American’s to potential health issues such as obesity and being overweight. There is quite the stereotype about Americans and being overweight due to the great amounts of accessibility to fast “on-the-go” foods. The USA is the second most obese country in the world, trailing right behind Mexico, ranking 31.8% of its population being obese (Berman). Anyone can be susceptible to obesity and becoming overweight by having an inactive lifestyle, family/genetics that are dealing with obesity and an unhealthy environment that maybe be standing in the way of accessing tools towards a health lifestyle. An inactive lifestyle can be a huge impediment to an individual’s health; more than two hours of television a day has been linked to obesity (Gibbons, 2013). Many physicians are pushing healthy lifestyles more than ever due to the amount of childhood obesity occurring.
