In 1998, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. In 2014 Google was named “The best Place to work for” for the fifth time by Fortune Magazine. In less than 20 years, Google has grown to include a workforce of over 50,000 employees serving millions globally.Google heavily pampers their employees enabling them to produce elite products and services. The company lives by the motto of “To Create the Happiest, Most Productive Workplace in the World (Martian); putting employee moral before company results is the key to their success.
In Google’s early days, Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to model their company culture based on a company that truly valued work culture and employee morale. They used the the SAS institute, which had just been ranked the number one place to work, as a model for Google. Their research concluded that people were very successful in their jobs when they felt truly valued and supported. Theory Y, which is the belief that if workers are given the appropriate work environment workers should be able to perform well and the worker is the most important component to a company provided a base to build their culture. Google’s Vice president Torrence Boone, believes that “It’s less about the aspiration to be No. 1 in the world, and more that we want our employees and future employees to love it here, because that’s what’s going to make us successful”(Maritan).
