In the film “A Beautiful Mind”, Dr. John Nash suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. “Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that causes a person to experience distorted perceptions, inappropriate emotions or reactions, and confusion”(Baird, 2011). Paranoid is a subtype of schizophrenia, which includes delusions of grandeur and persecution, often accompanied by hallucinations(Baird, 2011). At the beginning of the film, Dr. John Nash starts his career at Princeton University as a mathematics graduate student, that spent most of his time striving to discover a profound, truly original equation in mathematics. At this point, Dr. Nash develops one of the three imaginary characters in his mind, his room mate, Charles Herman. After being employed at Wheeler Labs, Dr. Nash was called to the Pentagon twice to analyze Russian codes, which leads to the development of the second character, Parcher. Parcher hires Dr. Nash to decipher codes at the Pentagon, sparking his interest and allowing him to feel that he is a valuable asset to the government. The third hallucination emerged as an 8 year old girl named Marcee, Marcee is Charles 's niece. She appeared during the time that Dr. Nash was having difficulty asking Alicia to marry him. The onset of each hallucination and delusion were caused by major personal stressors:
Stress from not receiving the desired placement at Wheeler Labs.
Stress from feeling unappreciated at his job.
Stress of asking Alicia to marry him and the stress of…
