America is known as the land of the free. Our country was founded on freedom. Our government was created with freedom in mind. But as our country continues to develop in newer, harsher times, our freedoms are slowly being taken away from us. The American dream that so many people strive for always seems just out of reach. America in general is not as strong as it once was. If America continues on its same path, it will no longer be the great, thriving country it is. Simply stated, democracy is a government system in which people vote for who they want to work in their government. Democracy could also be loosely described as freedom. In America, if you are an American citizen, then you can vote for who you would like to represent your country and make decisions for the good of your country. Modern day democracy is very different from what democracy used to be like. Now, when voting, American citizens “make their way to the polls to cast their votes for a limited set of candidates.” After the citizens vote, elected representatives take over. This is one of the many freedoms that American citizens often take for granted. With our freedoms on the decline, I do feel like American citizens should start taking advantage of every freedom that is granted to us while we still can. There are American’s who are trying to take away some of our freedoms like: freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, the freedom of religion, and many others.
