Teaching Plan for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the 4th leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of morbidity (CDC, 2011).
COPD is a group of diseases which cause airflow blockage and breathing related problems such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and some forms of asthma (CDC, 2011). COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year and is expected to be the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States by 2020. Smoking is

the most common cause of COPD (Mannino, 2008). Information should be

given on indoor and outdoor respiratory irritants and advised to avoid all

respiratory irritants when possible. The individual should be advised of the

importance to obtain medical treatment when an acute respiratory infection

occurs.

The individual needs to have a common knowledge of medications and

have an understanding of their action. Common medications used to treat

COPD include: bronchodilators given to help protect against

bronchospasm, antimicrobial agents used to treat respiratory infections,

steroids are used as anti-inflammatory agents when an exacerbation occurs,

and oxygen may be prescribed to maintain oxygen saturation. Other

treatments to be discussed with the individual could be chest physical

therapy and breathing retraining (Suddarth, 2001).

Clinical manifestations need to be discussed with the patient so he

has a better understanding of what to expect as the disease progresses or

exacerbates. Clinical manifestations include: productive cough lasting

longer than 3 months, production of thick gelatinous sputum, wheezing, and

shortness of breath (Suddarth, 2001). Knowing what to expect and what not

to expect helps the individual know when to take action and seek help.
