Containment is a military strategy to stop the expansion of an enemy or some sort of ideology . It is best known as the Cold War policy of the United States and its allies to prevent the spread of communism.However, is been used in many ways in history. This policy was a response to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge communist influence in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, Africa, and Vietnam.
To understand the policy and why was it put to action , you have to understand the US and Soviet Union’s relationship. Through World War II, the U.S. and the Soviet Union were unwilling allies. Germany posed a significant threat to both countries and necessity of union that they cooperate militarily. Germany had started an invasion into the Soviet Union that caused the deaths of 20 million Soviets. The USSR asked western countries like the U.S., and England to help them defeat the Germans. The U.S.and England didn’t have many resources and really didn’t want to launch a expensive attack the Germans. Instead, the western Allies engaged the Germans on other fronts, allowing the Soviets to fight back against the Nazis and gain their lost land back. The U.S. and the Soviet Union had vastly differing political thinking and their relationship was stretched by a thin thread until it finally began to break apart during the later years of the war.
