Church’s Teaching on the Family

 Marriage is a natural institution established by God.
 It is a permanent, faithful, fruitful partnership between one man and one woman, established by their free mutual consent.
 Marriage has two purposes: the good of the spouses (unitive) and the procreation and education of children.
 Marriage is a vocation that needs preparation and support by the Church and the state.
 Conjugal love requires totally self-giving to each other. This love is the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being.
 Family is a domestic Church, a small communion of persons that draws its sustenance from the larger Church.
 Parents have the special responsibility to teach children the faith and help them to grow in virtue.
 Family forms an image of the Trinitarian God in two ways:
 Marriage is a communion of love between co-equal persons that is extended to all members of the family.
 A married couple’s love conceives and cares for children.
 Family forms a community of persons.
 Love is the inner principle, the permanent power, and the final goal of the family. Without love the family cannot be a community of persons.
 Through their covenant of married life, man and woman are no longer two, but one flesh.
 Through their yes, Christian couples are called to participate in the same irrevocable indissolubility that binds Christ to his Church.
