“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These words have been called by some to be divinely inspired of God himself. July 4th 1776, men searching for independence and freedom declared independence from Great Britain. What these men did was form a new government and a new country. Many Independence. But recent claims have gone against that belief, such as the teachings of Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz in his book Blasphemy: How the Religious Right is Hijacking the Declaration of Independence, his introduction contradicts the ideology of many Americans that the Declaration of Independence was drafted upon the means of Christian beliefs and motifs. The introduction is titled, “Is the United States Christian Nation?” Dershowitz explains in the introduction that Americans have used the Declaration of Independence a “baptismal certificate” in their claim as a Christian nation. So the question at stake is whether or not the United States is found upon Christian motifs and beliefs as the Declaration of Independence proclaims. An analysis of the word usage and diction of the Declaration of Independence exemplifies Christian beliefs as it refers to “God” on several occasions in the declaration.
