The theme that I felt most powerful in this story was Beauty. What is beauty means to you? According to research only few percent of women would describe themselves as beautiful. There are more than one definitions of beauty, but my favorite one found in the English Dictionary, which defines beauty as “the combination of all qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and please the mind.” It is not only how you looks, but it is every little aspect of a person’s character. Beauty does not have a standard example. Everyone has something beautiful to show in his or her own unique way.
In the story of Alice Walker, “Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self” viewing oneself as beautiful all depends on one’s perspective. Through her journey of self-discovery, she transforms from a conceited child that is constantly praised and admired for her appearance prior to one accident. She was shot in the eye with a BB gun that changed her life. Her face was now no longer flawless and she had to learn that beauty comes from within, to a young woman suddenly overwhelmed by shame and feelings of self-worthlessness that the injury had cause to her. All of a sudden, her life perspective is negatively altered as she faces rejection, harassment, and multiple life changes. Her self-destructive behavior that develops as a result of her negative perception is displayed when she states “That night, as I do almost every night, I abuse my eye. I rant and rave at it, in front of the mirror.…
