Essay on Baseball : America 's Best Pastimes
The earliest mention of “baseball” was in 1792 Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They documentation only came about because there was a law banning, at the time, the informal playing of the game within 80 yards of the town meeting house. (baseball-reference) Another early reference reports that "base ball" was regularly played on Saturdays in Greenwich Village in 1823. However, a young man named Abner Doubleday invented the game known as baseball in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. As “base ball” started to take off Doubleday also had to take off into the military because it was during times of war.
The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the New York Knickerbockers. The Knickerbockers started off as a social club in New York, for the upper class in 1845. However the armature club shortly after fell apart, but Alexander Cartwright, formulated the "Knickerbocker Rules” which laid down organizational rules as well as the game rules, known as the “New York Game.” (baseball-reference)
