Many, if not the majority of, Americans are obsessed with protein. The general attitude towards protein is that the more you consume the healthier and stronger you will be, as confirmed by an article on BodyBuilding.com written by Kendall Schmidt. General concerns for protein intake are highest for those who follow a vegan or plant-based diet, and they are constantly questioned whether they are getting enough or not. And the answer is yes; it is easy for a vegan or plant-based diet to meet daily recommendations for protein. As long as they are consuming an adequate intake of total calories, a wide variety of whole foods, and their overall diets are balanced then they should not have a problem meeting their daily protein needs.
For someone who is following a vegan, or plant-based, diet the concern is not about too many calories, but rather about meeting the minimum daily needs. A vegan diet is based around whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, as well as plant oils. Those who disagree with a vegan diet claim that by eating only plant-based foods, the amount of calories consumed will be too low to sustain a healthy lifestyle with adequate protein. And furthering their argument with the idea that animal based foods, such as meat, dairy and eggs, contain more calories and protein per serving, allowing the consumer to meet their needs much more easily.
